Hip-hop began at block parties in the Bronx in the seventies, where DJs looped the breakbeat of a record so dancers could keep going and MCs kept the crowd moving between sections. It later branched into West Coast G-funk, Southern trap, and East Coast boom bap.
The drums are the core. Boom bap is sample-heavy and loose; trap is defined by 808 bass and rolling hi-hats. Notation usually sits between 60 and 90 BPM, with trap feeling closer to 130 to 150 through half-time. Negative space and low-end weight matter more than melody, and the flow decides how good the result is.
Best for rhythm-and-attitude writing: the flow can be aggressive or laid back, but the beat has to leave room for a voice to breathe and the low end needs to stay heavy and steady.
